Hall, Gourlay know how to lead a resort

It might seem strange, and to some inappropriate, for an outsider to write a letter endorsing candidates for a local election in which I can’t vote. Be that as it may, I have had the pleasure of working with your mayor, Randy Hall, and your council president, Baird Gourlay, several times over the past year and I want to endorse them both as excellent elected officials and wonderful representatives for your community.
Early this summer I was invited to deliver a keynote address to the Idaho Economic Development Association in Sun Valley. At the same time, I had the opportunity to meet with many local community leaders in Ketchum and talk about issues and challenges facing most resorts around the country.
It was obvious to me that both Randy and Baird were fully aware of the challenges and were taking very progressive steps to meet them head on. We are facing demographic, economic and climatic changes of historic proportions that demand our immediate attention. Sitting back resting on past successes is simply not an option, and while no one knows the best directions, it is imperative we experiment and try to find new solutions.
You in Ketchum are blessed with such an abundance of natural beauty that complacency is an ever-present danger. I know Randy and Baird share this sense of immediacy and a penchant for action. I hope voters know how lucky they are to have two talented and committed individuals who wish to continue serving their community.
This feeling is not mine alone. This past week, I organized a three-day tour for 45 individuals from Park City. We were originally scheduled to visit Boulder, Colo., but due to their tragic flooding, we quickly “pivoted” and called friends in Ketchum and Sun Valley to see if we could salvage the tour. Your community not only invited us on very short notice, but put out the “red carpet.” We owe a great debt of thanks to Lisa Horowitz who helped organize our visit, and especially to Randy Hall and Baird Gourlay who dropped whatever they were doing to share their knowledge and expertise with our group.
Our Park City group of sometimes-jaded and cynical longtime resort residents was positively awed by what your community is accomplishing with limited resources and by the quality of your elected officials and city staff.
So, thank you, Ketchum, and a special thank you to Mayor Randy Hall and Council President Baird Gourlay. We wish you every success and a very snowy winter.
