They had a close call, but the unbeaten record of Community School soccer girls is still intact after Tuesday’s 3-2 High Desert Soccer Conference come-from-behind road win over the determined Filer Wildcats.
In a rematch of last year’s HDSC tournament championship game won by the Cutthroats from Sun Valley by a lopsided 7-0 score, the Filer squad led by scoring star Darby Robertson built a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore Lilly Jenner equalized in the second half, her second goal of the game, and Cutthroat sophomore Samantha Busby punched home the game-winning goal for the 3-2 final.
Hannah Dies added an assist and Jenner (13 goals season, having scored in 9 of 11 games) was the “Player of the Game.” Jenner now has 29 goals over two seasons and has been remarkably productive, scoring goals in 27 of her 36 games.
Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroat girls (12-0-0, 11-0-0 league) finished their regular-season slate Thursday against Wendell (2-7-2) and will host a second-round game in the HDSC tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4:30 p.m. on the Sagewillow Farms pitch in Elkhorn.
Filer (10-3-1, 9-2-0) is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and could meet the Cutthroats again Thursday, Oct. 17 in the league championship game at 4:30 on the Sagewillow field. The conference will send its top two teams to the State 3A tournament Oct. 24 in Caldwell.
Coach Richard Whitelaw’s Community School boys (11-2-2, 8-1-2) celebrated their sixth shutout 4-0 at Filer Tuesday.
On target with 10 goals in his last four games, sophomore Jay Fitzgerald (20 goals) scored two goals for the winners. Sophomore Alex Schwartz recorded his first varsity goal. “Men of the Match” were Fitzgerald and Perry Boyle.
The Cutthroat boys open HDSC tournament play Saturday at SunWay Soccer Complex, their game time either 12 noon or 2 p.m. depending on the results of Thursday’s regular-season finale against Wendell.
