Hailey’s Wood River High School has hired Donnie Green as the new head baseball coach for the Wolverines.

Green becomes only the third head coach in 22 years of Wood River High School baseball, following program founder Lars Hovey and Matt Nelson, who resigned in May after eight years at the Hailey helm.

Wood River athletic director John Rade announced Green’s appointment Thursday.

Rade said, “As a coach and player, Mr. Green brings years of baseball experience to the Wood River High School baseball program.

“Donnie’s work ethic, energy and passion for the game of baseball will have a positive impact on WRHS baseball players. He will be a great role model for our student athletes.”

Green, 35, son of Larry and Jacque Green, grew up in Orem, Utah and played high school baseball for the Orem Tigers.

As a boy he spent hours in his batting cage that his father built for him and his brothers. Green played outfield and pitched for Orem High. During his junior year, Orem won the 5A state championship for the first time in school history.

Green went on to play for the National Adult Baseball Association (NABA) where he continued to pitch and play the outfield for another eight years.

Donnie married his wife NiCole in 1997. The couple has three daughters and one son. In 2008, Donnie’s job transferred him to the Wood River Valley where he currently is the general manager of the Albertson’s Grocery Store in Hailey.

Immediately he and his family fell in love with the area, community and the opportunities that come with living in the Wood River Valley community.

He has coached youth baseball since 2005. Donnie has also worked with youth in his church for an additional six years while living in Utah.

Green enjoys fitness. He is co-owner of Hailey’s Bigwood Fitness where he is working towards his personal training and cross-fit certifications. He likes being outdoors and competing in a variety of sports.

He said he is grateful for the opportunity to coach for Wood River High and looks forward to growing the baseball program and making positive life changing impacts on the young men of Wood River High.
