More candidates have filed to compete in the race for two open seats on the Ketchum City Council.
Ketchum and Sun Valley city elections will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 5. There are two council seats up for election in both Ketchum and Sun Valley.
Councilwoman Nina Jonas will vacate her seat on the Ketchum City Council to run against incumbent Randy Hall for mayor of Ketchum.
Seven candidates have filed their declarations of candidacy for the two open seats in Ketchum, those of Jonas and incumbent Councilman Baird Gourlay. The candidates include current council President Gourlay, Amanda Breen, Deborah Burns, Anne Corrock, Mickey Garcia, Aaron Pearson and Brennan Rego.
Gourlay, an owner of PK’s Ski and Sports in Ketchum, will be running for a fourth term on the council. Breen has lived in Ketchum since 1998, and operates her own law practice in the city. Burns, a member of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, is longtime proprietor of clothing businesses in Ketchum.
Corrock is a hairdresser who formerly served on the Ketchum Planning and Zoning Commission. She was part of an effort to change the city’s form of government from one run by a mayor to one run by a city manager. Rego is a graduate of Stanford University who works for a website group called Concierge Q. As a graduate of the studio art program from Dartmouth College, Pearson is an artist who has previously lived in New York City, Argentina, Italy and California. Garcia is a longtime Ketchum resident who has previously run for City Council, mayor and Blaine County commissioner.
The four candidates running for City Council in Sun Valley are current council President Bob Youngman, Peter Hendricks, Stephen Poindexter and Keith Saks. Councilman Nils Ribi has announced that he will not run for re-election, opening up his seat for a new representative.
Youngman, a former physicist, will be running for his second term in office. Hendricks currently serves on the Steering Committee for the Sun Valley Comprehensive Plan and has lived in Sun Valley full-time since 2008. Saks is a member of the Sun Valley Planning and Zoning Commission, with previous work experience as a lawyer, arbitrator and professional mediator. After running unsuccessfully for City Council in 2009 and 2011, Poindexter will be making his third attempt at running for public office. He works as a cashier in Ketchum.
The deadline for candidates to withdraw from the races in both Ketchum and Sun Valley is Sept. 20. The last day for write-in candidates to file a declaration of intent is Oct. 8, while the close of voter registration will be on Oct. 11.
Polls will be open on Election Day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Ketchum and Sun Valley.
