Sara Youmans, 17, of Ketchum is one of three Junior Women selected to the USA Cycling National Road Cycling Team set to compete at the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Championships at Toscana, Italy Sept. 22-29.
USA Cycling, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., announced on Tuesday, Sept. 3 the 29 riders that will represent this country in Italy. Youmans, riding for Stranamanti Cycling/Keller Rohrback Cycling, is one of three Junior Women who were chosen as discretionary picks.
The others are Kelly Catlin of Arden Hills, Minn. and Hanna Swan, 17, of Alpine, Ca.
Youmans is currently the only Category 1 Junior Woman racer in the nation. She has been cycling competitively since she was 11, when she joined the Sun Summit Cycling Team of the Wood River Valley.
She has won 15 state championships in all three road cycling disciplines—road, time trial and criterium—in both Idaho and Washington. She also has won a national time trial championship.
Youmans is one of three Idaho cyclists to make the team. One of seven Junior Men is William Barta, 17, of Boise and the Boise Young Rider Development squad (BYRDS). He earned the Best Young Rider recognition at the Tour de l'Abitibi in Canada in July to earn a discretionary selection.
