The first time one stumbles across the music of the Andes, it is oftentimes in an open-air marketplace, where the wind and sky are enlisted as acoustic implements to disseminate the music. It can take a while to follow the invisible trail to its source.
One won’t have trouble tracing the source of the ear-tickling and uplifting music of the South American mountain people when Los Hermanos de los Andes performs two shows this weekend at the Community Campus in Hailey.
They will play at 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, and again at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, in the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students. Children 5 and under can get in free. A portion of the ticket price will go towards sending the Young Wolverines’ Spanish Club on a cultural immersion trip to Puerto Rico in June 2014.
The group of middle school boys and girls is led by Jorge Pulleiro. This event will launch their fundraising effort.
Los Hermanos de los Andes (Brothers of the Andes), is a six-member band that performs traditional Andean and Peruvian music, magnificently blending melodies and enticing listeners of all ages to soar with the condor to the highest summits of the Andes.
The group uses instruments dating back to the Incan civilization, including the charango, a 10-string instrument made from an armadillo back; the quena, which is a notched bamboo flute; a zampona, which is a bamboo pan flute; and a goat-skin bass drum known as the wank’ara.
Since 1989, members of Los Hermanos de los Andes have traveled throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America, Europe and Asia. Among their performances, Los Hermanos de los Andes has made many guest appearances throughout the western United States and Hawaii. They have recorded and consulted for Macmillan/McGraw-Hill’s school division, Brigham Young University, Embryo Records and TBS.
Their CDs can be found at www.andesproduction.com and at Amazon.
