WRHS tennis turns it around, beats Minico

9-3 victory, Richards leading the way

Clashing for the second time against its toughest Great Basin Conference opponent, the Wood River High School tennis team turned it around and beat Minico 9-3 Tuesday on the Hailey courts. Wood River’s boys beat Minico 3.5 to 2.5, and the Hailey girls prevailed 5.5 to 0.5.
Back on April 4 in Rupert, Minico captured a rare 7-5 team victory over the perennial tennis powerhouse from Wood River. In that meet, Minico swept girls’ singles and split the doubles matches 3-3. But on Tuesday, Wood River swept girls’ singles and won five of the six doubles matches.
Top surprise was Wood River senior Lily Richards winning her No. 1 girls’ singles match in straight sets over previously unbeaten Eva Mollik of Minico. Mollik is a German foreign exchange student who is shooting for a district girls’ singles title before returning to her country in June.
Also, Tayte Kelly rallied from a 6-4 first-set loss at No. 3 girls’ singles to sweep the next two sets 6-1, 6-1. Stephen Pfeiffer won in straight sets at No. 1 boys’ singles, and Wood River’s five doubles victories also came in straight sets.
Wolverine seniors playing their final home matches were Audrey Brassil, Alex Feldman, Margaret Reutter, Lily Richards, Cole Caminiti, Josh Morell and Jose Juarez.
Hailey played at the Community School Thursday, after which coach Carlos Meza’s Wolverines aim for the state-qualifying GBC district tourney Wednesday and Thursday, May 8-9 in Twin Falls.
Next week’s district tournament will be played at five sites—the College of Southern Idaho courts (boys’ doubles), Harmon Park (girls’ doubles), Frontier Field (mixed doubles), Canyon Ridge High School (girls’ singles) and Twin Falls High School (boys’ singles).
The top four finishers in each event will represent the district at the State 4A tournament May 17-18 at Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
