A 33-year-old Hailey man has been charged with a felony for allegedly attempting to strangle his girlfriend.
Carlos Alberto Alvarez-Palomera was formally charged with the crime of attempted strangulation at an initial court appearance Monday in Blaine County Magistrate Court. Hailey attorney Cheri Hicks was appointed public defender.
Alvarez-Palomera remained incarcerated Tuesday in the Blaine County jail on $10,000 bond. An immigration detainer was filed against Alvarez-Palomera by the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency accusing him of being in the United States illegally.
Hailey police reported that they were notified of the alleged crime at 12:10 a.m. Monday.
“The call came from a female who said she had been strangled by her boyfriend,” said Hailey Assistant Police Chief Dave Stellers.
Stellers said the couple had been living together at an apartment complex at 661 Woodside Blvd. in southeast Hailey.
“They got into a fight and allegedly during the fight the defendant attempted to strangle the victim,” Stellers said.
Stellers said the woman notified police from another apartment in the complex. He said Alvarez-Palomera was arrested without incident at the couple’s residence.
