Guitar-driven folk music, funk and some eye-popping fancy footwork are all on the bill for this year’s Sun Valley Center for the Arts summer concerts.
For 2013, the popular outdoor concerts feature Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings on Sunday, July 14, and Josh Ritter & the Royal City Band on Wednesday, Aug. 14, both at the River Run base of Bald Mountain.
Tickets range in price from $30 to $85. Sun Valley Center for the Arts members will have the opportunity to buy tickets to both shows at once with a 10 percent discount, starting May 17, before individual ticket sales open to everyone on May 31.
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have built a huge fan base, thanks in part to their long touring schedule. Their vintage funk/soul sound and Jones’ astonishing dance moves have packed venues worldwide, including two consecutive sold-out shows last year at New York’s legendary Apollo Theatre, an outdoor concert in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park that attracted nearly 20,000 people, and show-stopping sets at the Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo music festivals.
Josh Ritter is a singer-songwriter-guitarist with six albums and a novel under his belt and fans who love to sing along with his heartfelt folk-rock anthems. His Americana style first took hold in a big way in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Ritter was named one of the 100 greatest living songwriters by Paste magazine.
Ritter’s live performances are applauded for his ability to connect with audiences. A crowd favorite is always his song “Idaho”—and as a Moscow, Idaho, native, he’s singing straight from the heart. Ritter will bring his lineup of talented backup musicians, the Royal City Band, with him to River Run. Opening for Ritter are The Milk Carton Kids, an up-and-coming Americana duo that relies on the time-tested elements of harmony, acoustic guitars and solid songwriting.
At these shows, picnics with food and beverages are allowed, as are low-backed chairs. Sun Valley Co. also will have food and drinks available for sale.
Seating is limited. Go to www.sunvalleycenter.org or call (208)726-9491, ext. 110, to purchase tickets. Tickets can also be purchased in person at The Center in Ketchum during regular business hours.
