Donít kill tennis

Elkhorn homeowners have just received a questionnaire prepared by the Sun Valley-Elkhorn Association regarding a proposal to temporarily replace some of our tennis courts with pickleball courts. I will be responding firmly in the negative. I believe the answer to questions such as this one will determine not only what our facility mix is to be, but much more importantly, what kind of community Elkhorn is to be—a growing, vibrant, younger community or a senior citizen community. (Full disclosure: I am a senior citizen). I anticipate a vibrant future for Elkhorn.
As we transition out of the recession and hopefully young families move to the village center and elsewhere in the community, there will be increasing demand for our facilities. Why, in the face of increasing demand for these facilities, would we want to consider undergoing a downsizing? Would we consider a reduction of our pool or bicycle path facilities?
My assessment is partly self-serving. Although I do not play, both my daughters are players. Twice last summer, they were unable to procure courts at the 9 a.m. timeslot. Although this has been a rare phenomenon at other timeslots in recent years, we should anticipate more such disappointment as the demand increases while we reduce our recreational assets. Athletes (and non-athletes) have been playing tennis or its precursor forms for 1,000 years. Surely our community can find a venue for pickleball advocates, a venue that doesn’t diminish one of Elkhorn’s major summer attractions.
