Mermaids always captivate and the Community School’s Middle School is counting on their appeal to attract audiences to “Disney’s The Little Mermaid Junior.”
The show will be on Friday, April 19, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 20, at 5 p.m. at the Community School Theater. Tickets are $5, at the door and on sale now at Iconoclast Books.
The Little Mermaid Junior takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.
The 60-minute, intermission-free, musical is based on the 2008 Broadway production and the 1989 animated feature film. The Community School Middle School cast is made up of about 40 students led by Middle School drama teacher Joel Vilinsky.
Seventh-grade teacher Nancy Parsons-Brown is directing choreography, and Elementary and Middle School music teacher Alyssa Hershey is directing vocals. Middle School students are designing lighting and sets.
“Everyone has really devoted themselves to this show.”
Community School parent Maria Gerhardt is designing the elaborate costume ensemble, which includes jellyfish made out of bubble wrap and LED lights, 4-foot-long “swimming” fish and moving tentacles on Ursula’s menacing costume.
“This show is going to be exciting,” Vilinsky said in a press release. “The Community School village has come together to put on this production. For instance, actors have helped choreograph dances, Upper School student Whitney Engelmann collaborated in the set design, Maria Gerhardt helped create fantastic costumes and parents helped build the sets. Everyone has really devoted themselves to this show, and it’s going to be great.”
This classic Disney production contains all the songs from the Academy Award-winning animated feature film as well as three new songs from the Broadway show.
