Silver Creek and Wood River high schools were placed in “Code Red” security alert for about 20 minutes last Thursday afternoon when an 18-year-old Silver Creek student resisted arrest by Hailey police.
Under a Code Red alert, the schools are locked down and students are not allowed to leave. Hailey Assistant Police Chief Dave Stellers said Friday that an officer making the arrest requested the alert to keep other students away from the incident, which took place outside the building. When Silver Creek High School goes into security alert, Wood River High School does also because of the close proximity of the two schools.
Stellers explained that the student was being expelled from the school that day because he had visited inappropriate websites using a school computer. Stellers said the student was arrested because he was on probation for a crime committed as a juvenile. A condition of his probation was that he remain in school.
“They discovered a few weeks ago that he was using a school computer to access sites that were not allowed to be accessed,” Stellers said. “He was visiting sites like how to make pipe bombs, how to make propane bombs, stuff like that.”
The student was arraigned in court Friday on three misdemeanor criminal charges.
