“Today, I went skiing in the morning and golfing in the afternoon. What did you do?” That’s a question that the Wood River Valley’s more boastful and less sympathetic residents will be able to use to drive their city-dwelling friends crazy, starting today.

According to a recent Sun Valley Co. news release, the resort is scheduled to open its driving range and practice greens this morning, while it does not plan to close Bald Mountain for the season until Sunday, April 14. That means ski and golf enthusiasts can enjoy both activities on the same day from now through next Sunday.

“It happens rarely,” resort spokesman Jack Sibbach said about the overlap.

Sibbach said he couldn’t recall how many times it’s occurred, but said the resort always aims to give its guests as many recreation options as possible. He said the resort decided to open the driving range and practice greens earlier than usual this year since the snow on the valley floor has melted and the ground at the driving range is dry enough to run the picker—the machine that picks up all the balls.

“It’s good for us to get golf open as soon as we can,” he said.

The driving range and practice greens, along with the resort’s golf pro shop, will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. According to the release, the Sawtooth Putting Course will “open soon.”

Golfing has also started at Bigwood Golf Course north of Ketchum. Bigwood’s nine holes opened for the 2013 season Tuesday, April 2, at 1 p.m. and is currently accepting tee times starting at 9 a.m. The driving range is also open at Bigwood. Call 726-4024 to make tee times.

Sun Valley Lodge to close for a week

From Sunday, April 7, through Sunday, April 14, the resort will close the Sun Valley Lodge to conduct infrastructure maintenance, including extending the building’s ceiling sprinkler system and touching up its paint job.

Gretchen’s Restaurant, the Duchin Lounge, the gift shop, the bowling alley, the pool, the spa and the beauty salon will be closed as well. The resort will continue to offer lodging accommodations at the Sun Valley Inn during that time.
