It was a good day of swings for the Wood River High School golf teams during Wednesday’s Minico Invitational tournament at Rupert Country Club. Thirteen Wolverines made the trip and all put 18-hole scores on the board.
Tyler Spence carded an 82 to lead the Wolverine boys. Reilly Neel scored 86, Max Mihalic 96, Lane Coulthard 98 and Rocket Stickney 121. Wood River totaled 362 strokes to place fifth in the six-team field of Great Basin Conference schools.
The Twin Falls Bruins boys won the team race 286 to 344 over Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls. Individual medalist was Derek Thompson of Twin Falls with a two-under-par 69.
Other Wolverine boys were Brandon Dolenar 104, Kristian Whittaker 126 and Wyatt Johnson 132.
Wood River coach Chet Olson said, “Our boys’ scores were a little high, but as we get out to The Valley Club this week our practices on grass will help tremendously.
“Our girls are showing great progress placing second in our district behind (but not by much) behind Twin Falls. Bella Stimac had her lowest score of the season while Caitie Sfingi shot 110 in only her second tournament. Very promising.”
The Wood River girls’ scores were Stimac 107, Sfingi 110, Alysha Herich 110, Mary Petzke 120 and Lidija Jurovich 164.
The Twin Falls girls, led by medalist Sydney Lee (85), won team honors 398 to 447 over Wood River. Stimac carded the sixth-best score of the 23 girls in the tournament.
Wood River’s girls visit the Buhl Invitational Monday, April 8 and the Wolverine boys travel to the Gate City Invitational meet Tuesday, April 9 at Riverside Golf Course in Pocatello.
