With their 10 “spring training” games in the books, Wood River High School softball and baseball teams have opened their 2013 home seasons and are looking forward to more home games in coming days.
Coach Dale Martin’s Wolverine softball team and coach Matt Nelson’s baseball squad debuted home campaigns Tuesday against the tough Twin Falls Bruins and, weather permitting, are planning to host Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls for more Great Basin Conference games this weekend.
The softball team (0-4) entertains Canyon Ridge for a doubleheader Saturday, April 6 at 12 noon at South Valley Sports Complex’s Martin Field by the high school. The baseball team (0-6) hosts the Riverhawks for a single game Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Hailey’s Founders Field.
Wood River’s baseball team will have another home game against Kimberly Tuesday, April 9 at 4:30 p.m.
A season highlight will be the 10th year reunion of Wood River’s 2013 State 3A tournament championship team coached by Hovey. Players and coaches will be introduced between games of the “Senior Day” home doubleheader against Minico Friday, April 26, then there will be a team banquet and weekend golf.
Here is a preview of the Wolverine players this season:
Seniors Sydney Tidwell and Kori Paradis lead the Hailey varsity coached by Dale Martin, along with assistant coaches Jim Bradley, Jeff Martin and Jimberly Rooney.
Tidwell (.444 batting average, 36 hits, 27 RBI, 6 HRs) led last year’s 9-15 Wolverine team in virtually all hitting categories and set numerous career marks including slugging percentage (.636) and batting average (.413). Paradis hit .373 with 25 hits last spring for Hailey.
As a freshman in 2012, righthander Britney Bradley won seven games and was Wood River’s pitching ace. The other seniors this year are Rachel Conover and Shea Goitiandia. Juniors are Shelby Cooper and Cassidy Cooper.
Besides pitcher Bradley, the varsity sophomores are Samantha Sutton, Ashley Hicks, Lacy Harrington and Ciceley Peavey. The lone freshman on varsity is Chloe Evans.
On coach Jamie Stone’s Wolverine junior varsity team are juniors Meghan Kehrer and Bridget Kernan; sophomores Real Weatherly, Alysha Herich and Riley Clark; and freshmen Zoe Gibson, Arya Gibson, Janelle Meyers, Mari Worthington, Delaney Brassil, Sochie Goitiandia and Kelsea Beck. Assistant JV coach is Anna Edwards and the manager is Ashley Karst.
Head coach Nelson was encouraged that the Wolverine turnout jumped from just 15 players during last year’s 1-23 season, to 27 players this year. That has enabled Wood River to have a junior varsity team.
Nelson said, “In my opinion the jump in numbers is a direct result of the new middle school baseball program implemented last year. A special thanks to middle school principal Fritz Peters, Jonah Torseth and Lars Hovey and the many volunteer coaches last season.”
Wood River has seven returning seniors—Nick Brunker, Tim Boyle, Ben Williams, Jared Anderson, Dylan Simpson, Nick Schell and Joe McGonigal. Back after a three-year hiatus is senior Zack Freeman. Nelson said, “It’s a solid group of kids who have come together to play hard.”
Juniors are Finn Isaacson and Armando Gomez. Sophomores are Will Long and Hunter Frye. Varsity bench coaches are Jonah Torseth and Mike Brunker.
Head coach Jesse Neet of the Wolverine junior varsity is being helped by former Wood River player Juan Martinez.
Their 13-player squad consists of two sophomores, Kyle Weller and Dallas Wilson, plus 11 freshmen—Alec Nordsieck, Nic Tidwell, Adrian Rojas, Dylan Broman, Ryan Anderson, Matt Schell, Vreg Velasquez, Nelson Cantrell, Mikey Levy, Steve Cesar and Layne Felger.
Team managers are Seth Solis and Jeremy Ramos.
