The Sun Valley City Council has unanimously approved the expenditure of $7,500 from its fiscal 2013 events fund for three events this year.
The council voted during a meeting Monday to grant $3,700 to the Sun Valley Harvest Festival (Sept. 20-22), $2,750 to the Sun Valley Film Festival (March 14-17) and $1,000 to the Sun Valley Wellness Festival (May 23-27). The council has already given $5,000 of the $25,000 fund to the Boulder Mountain Tour and $3,000 for a fledgling mountain biking event, Rebecca’s Private Idaho, which will take place in August and September.
There is $9,500 remaining in the fund.
At the meeting, Margaret Walker, a city resident, said the money should be saved, not spent, especially since “house values are going down” and “taxes are being raised.” She said residents can donate to events themselves, should they choose to, but the city should not give money away for that purpose.
“I’m appalled that you as a council would give our taxpayers’ money away to groups that do not satisfy the criteria of adding to the welfare, the well-being, … safety and lifestyle of our citizens,” she said.
Councilwoman Michelle Griffith said the events fund is supported by local-option tax revenue, not property tax revenue. She said the city’s goal in funding the events is to generate even more LOT revenue to “keep property taxes down.”
