Yellowstone Rendezvous races are Saturday
Local cross-country skiers are gearing up for the 34th annual Yellowstone Rendezvous Nordic races Saturday, March 2 on the Rendezvous Ski trails at West Yellowstone, Mt. Offered is freestyle racing at 50 kilometer (31 miles), 25k, 10k, 5k and 2k distances, plus a 25k classic race that kicks off the festivities Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
Registration deadline is Thursday, Feb. 28 at 12 noon by visiting the race Web site at rendezvousrace.com or by calling the race organizer at 406-646-7265. Bib pick-up is Friday from 5-9:30 p.m. at the West Yellowstone Holiday Inn.
The awards party is Saturday at 7 p.m. at Holiday Inn. Prize money goes to the top three men and women at 25k distances ($300, $250, $200), plus the 50k race ($500, $400, $300).
Freestyle team qualifies 17 for Junior Nationals
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Freestyle/Freeskiing program has qualified 17 athletes for the USSA Freestyle/Freesking Junior National Championships March 3-10 at Park City, Utah. They are:
( Halfpipe and slopestyle: Trevor Hattabaugh, Jacob Beebe, River Kelly, Perry Boyle, Hayes Gilman, Eli Roberts, Parker Nance and Evathea Drougas.
( Moguls and dual moguls: RJ Bracken, Zac Maricich-Siele, Wyatt Wilson, Alec Poster, Wilson Dunn, Jack Rizzo, Morgan Shaver, Renee Shapiro and Alysha Herich.
Learn about Sun Valley’s Olympic/Paralympic training site
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation has invited the public to a launch reception and informational session about Sun Valley Resort’s designation as the 15th Olympic and Paralympic training site in the U.S.
The public event in the Sun Valley Inn Limelight Room begins Thursday, Feb. 28 with a 5 p.m. reception/no-host bar followed by a presentation about the Olympic designation at 5:30 p.m. with questions and answers.
Middle school basketball tourney in Hailey Saturday
Hailey’s Wood River Middle School is hosting the 2013 Magic Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) boys’ basketball tournament Saturday, March 2 at three gyms in Hailey.
Competing in the one-day single elimination tournament are teams from Wood River Middle School, Burley, East Minico of Rupert, West Minico of Paul, Jerome, and O’Leary and Stuart of Twin Falls. The seventh-grade games will be split between the middle school gym and the Community Campus gym. Eighth-grade games will be played at Wood River High School gym. Games begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Admission is $3 adults, $2 kids, free for seniors 60-and-over and kids 6-and-under.
Benefit crab feed for football team Saturday
The Wood River High School football program is planning its second annual Crab Feed and Raffle for Saturday, March 2 from 5-9 p.m. at the high school in Hailey. The all-you-can-eat cost of $30 per person (4 for $100) benefits WRHS football. Tickets are available at the high school office. Sawtooth Ski Festival is March 2-3 near Stanley
Try out the cross-country ski trails in the Sawtooth Valley Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3 during the 11th annual Sawtooth Ski Club Ski Festival.
The event begins Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Park Creek Poker Run and chili feed at the site six miles west of Stanley. The ski club’s benefit silent auction, dinner and dance with live music begins Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Stanley Community Center. And the Alturas Lake Trails soup kitchen social with a little limbering up on the Nordic trails there begins goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Call Karen Shideler at 208-774-3487 for more details.
Collegiate skiing finals in Sun Valley next week
The U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard (USCSA) 2013 National Championships in several disciplines will be staged at Sun Valley Resort Monday through Saturday, March 4-9.
Held at Sunday River, Maine last March, this year’s finals for American collegiate skiers and snowboarders will be held this year on Baldy, at Sun Valley Nordic Center, and on Dollar Mountain. Competition begins Tuesday, March 5 with women’s giant slalom on Baldy, sprint cross-country skiing at the Nordic Center, plus slopestyle and halfpipe on Dollar.
Among expected competitors are Sun Valley Ski Education alumnus Nina Hirner of College of Idaho, Jasmine Campbell of Whitman College and Harlan Collins of Montana’s Rocky Mountain College.
Friday Night Racing wraps up at Rotarun
Rotarun Ski Area’s Friday Night Racing Series ended Feb. 16 with a dual run giant slalom race on the Hailey hill. Division winners were Ellie Sandoz, Ella Boice, Trinity Dilworth, Michelle Sandoz, Ryan Sandoz, Bryce Foster and this year’s “King of the Hill” Jesse Foster. Collecting the most team points during the three-race series were the Rotarun Rippers with Hadley Hodges, Bryce Foster, Cree Johanningmeier, Thomas DeKlotz, Taylor Nelson, Maddox Nickum, Cedar Shepard and River Shepard.

B+ Hockey League game results from Sunday, Feb. 24 at Sun Valley Skating Center:
Hutch’s Bad Dogs (7-4-2) outscored Vipers (7-6-0) by an 11-2 count with goals by Jim Slanetz (3), Will Hemmings (3), Rob Prew (2), Lacie Hernandez, Baba Street and Chris Salvatierra. Baird Gourlay and Bill Sprong scored for Vipers.
Aardvarks (7-3-3) tied 6-6 with Rockets (5-6-1). Aardvarks scorers were Dave Klemer (2), Josh Green (2), Clark Shafer (1 goal/2 assists), Hemmings and Meri Whitehead (2 assists). Rockets single goals came from Ned Burns, Tim Jeneson, Mark Johnson, Shaun Kelly, Ken Pratt and Greg Townley.
Sharks (6-7-0) won 5-1 over Flounders (4-8-1). Hemmings had another hat trick for the winners with singles by Todd Avison (2 assists) and John Cortum. Dave Fluetsch scored for Flounders on passes by Sean Murphy and Salvatierra.
