Locals enjoying Masters World Cup in Italy

Podiums for Nordic racers


Wood River Valley cross-country skiers are among 1,173 athletes from 25 nations, including 127 from the U.S., who are enjoying the 32nd Masters Nordic World Cup that started its 10-day competition schedule Feb. 16 at Asiago, Italy.

There are 12 age classes for eligible skiers 30-and-over.

Wood River locals earned four bronze medals in their age classes Thursday in the long distance mass start freestyle events. They were Norman Clark in Men’s 80-84, Joanne Davis in Women’s 75-79, Kelly Allison in Women’s 50-54 and Jon Engen in Men’s 55-59.

Engen (2.03:09) was third of 34 men in his class in the 45-kilometer (27.9-mile) skate race. Clark (1.12:48) was third at 15k, Davis (1.24:48) third at 15k and Allison (1.32:39) third in the 30k women’s skate.

Other top results: 4—Muffy Ritz 1.33:52 in Women’s 55-59, 30k. 7—Del Pletcher 1.34:00 in Men’s 65-69, 30k. Others finishing their races Thursday included Pat Simpson, Leigh Mallory, Matt Gervase, Ann Scales, Carol Stevens, Carol McLaughlin, Jan Toohey, Charlotte Alexander, Kelly Martin, Lynn Chaldu and Kirsten Ritzau.

In Wednesday’s 4x5 classic/freestyle relays, Engen was on the third-place Men’s 55-59 team, Pletcher on the fifth-place Men’s 65-69 squad, with Ritz, Joney Otteson and Allison on a fourth-place relay team.

The sixth race of the competition, classic, is today. Look for more complete results from the World Cup Wednesday.
