Tying the knot can be the greatest day of a couple’s life together. Yet weddings can be challenging events to organize, and can sometimes put a serious dent in a family’s bank accounts.
Nearly-weds Sierra Dickens and Andre Mercier won’t have to worry about any of that stuff. Earlier this month, the couple won a deluxe wedding package, valued at $100,000, including a party for 100 in New York City and a $5,000 honeymoon travel credit.
The competition was organized by The Knot.com, a wedding planning website. Hundreds of couples vied for the wedding package, but Dickens and Mercier were chosen out of five finalists on Jan. 10, based on a three-minute video that the couple posted on the Internet describing their “unique and romantic story.”
The video recounts the day that Dickens responded to a “roommate wanted” ad that Mercier had placed in the newspaper. It describes the “instant chemistry” that occurred when Dickens answered the ad and walked into Mercier’s place.
“Some people spend their lives searching for their soulmates, others find them in the classifieds,” the couple said in their video.
Sierra Dickens grew up in the Wood River Valley and now lives with her fiancé in Los Angeles. The couple decided to give back by spending their honeymoon travel money by traveling the world volunteering and helping out with charities.
The only catch is that Sierra and Andre have had to relinquish control of the details of their nuptials to experts in the wedding business, from dress-makers and hair-dressers, to cake-bakers and jewelers. The packages for each of these details are then being voted on by Internet-viewers around the world.
Details and voting information for the remaining details of the Dickens/Mercier wedding can be found at www.theknot.com/dreamwedding. The wedding will be streamed live online on Valentine’s Day at www.theknot.com.
