Doctors, scientists and clinical investigators will meet in Sun Valley from Feb. 12-16 to share breast cancer information among themselves and with the public.
The 17th annual Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium is sponsored and organized by Ketchum nonprofit Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research. According to a recent Expedition Inspiration news release, the invitation-only symposium encourages top breast cancer researchers to exchange ideas in an effort to advance treatment or find a cure for the disease.
“The [symposium] is truly a meeting of the greatest minds in breast cancer research—the ‘rock stars’ of the field,” said Dr. Kimberly Allison, an Expedition Inspiration board member. “It’s a powerful event because of its singular focus on sharing ideas to move the field forward. There’s nothing quite like it.”
This year’s symposium is titled “The Role of Inflammation and Immunity in Breast Cancer Etiology and Treatment.” The event’s 17 invitees will discuss that and related topics behind closed doors at the resort. Two of the invitees, considered this year’s “young investigators” by Expedition Inspiration’s medical advisory committee, were awarded $15,000 by the organization to further their research efforts.
“These funds come at a critical juncture in young researchers’ careers,” said Committee Chair Dr. Angela DeMichele.
The public portion of the event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Sun Valley Inn from 5:30-7 p.m. According to the release, the free “Breast Cancer Update: Free Open Forum” will offer people the opportunity to hear the latest in breast cancer therapy and to have breast cancer-related questions answered.
“The quality of breast cancer-related information shared at this forum is unrivaled and incredibly relevant,” said Suzanne Pere-Mulenos, an Expedition Inspiration board member.
For those who can’t attend the public forum in person, it will be streamed online via UStream and YouTube. For more information on access to the streams, see the “Watch public forum online” sidebar attached to this story.
The symposium will end with Expedition Inspiration’s eighth annual Twilight Snowshoe for Breast Cancer Research fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 15, from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Valley Club. The fundraiser supports both the symposium and the young investigators grants and includes a sunset snowshoe excursion and a cocktail party featuring a silent auction. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at www.expeditioninspiration.org. The release states last year’s event raised about $50,000.
