Sun Valley Tele Series opens Saturday on Cozy

Presented by Scott, the 33rd annual Sun Valley Tele Series debuts Saturday, Jan. 26 with an all-terrain race on Baldy’s upper Cozy ski run. The course will encompass all aspects of telemark skiing including groomers, off-piste, moguls, gates, trees, rapaloosas and jumps. First-time racers and others can sample the course in two run-throughs Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Racing starts at 12 noon, with awards at 4:30 p.m. at Sawtooth Brewery. Be sure to register Saturday from 9-11 a.m. at Warm Springs Lodge. Other planned races are the Rotarun Ripper Friday, Feb. 8 at Hailey’s Rotarun Ski Area, a St. Patrick’s Day race March 17 at Soldier Mountain, and the Hawaiian Nationals on Baldy March 30.

 

High school hockey weekend

The Sun Valley Midget high school hockey team went 1-2-2 in five games played at Boise and in Idaho Falls last weekend. The young Suns tied Canyon County 2-2 Friday in Boise, and tied Skyline (Utah) 6-6 and beat Bonneville/Hillcrest of Idaho Falls 5-2. Weekend scorers were: Liam Jablonski 3 goals/3 assists, Gus Conrad 3/1, Eli Conrad 3-1, Drew Barsch 2/1, Roger Figge 1/2, George Everitt 1/1, Erik Wilander 1/0, Patrick Schneider 1/0, Jack Seiller 0/1, Cam Jenner 0/1, Hagen Barsch 0/1, Dylan Broman 0/1 and Mason Noyes 0/1.

 

Josey on podium in Rev Tour snowboard halfpipe

Sun Valley Snowboard Team 17-year-old Chase Josey placed third of 56 contestants in Thursday’s Revolution Tour snowboard halfpipe on Shaun’s Pipe at Northstar, Ca. Only U.S. winner Brandon Davis and Japan’s Raibu Katayama finished ahead of Josey, who has earned a World Cup start at Sochi, Russia along with Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation teammate Kaitlyn Farrington. Coach Andy Gilbert said, “This is a big opportunity for Chase.”

In Friday’s Rev Tour slopestyle at Northstar, Ryan Roemer, 17, placed 33th. Roemer was 17th in his heat in the pipe. He also raced boardercross Jan. 14 and put together two good runs to qualify into bracket racing in 14th place. Roemer was bumped out in the boardercross quarterfinals.

 

Club volleyball sign-ups Jan. 29

Program director Kristyn Rutland (721-2437) has announced Wood River Volleyball Club registration for girls in grades 4-8 is Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at Wood River Middle School gym, Hailey.

 

PeeWee hockey tourney starts Saturday

Sun Valley Youth Hockey’s PeeWee (ages 11-12) home tournament is Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 26 for six teams at Sun Valley Skating Center. Sun Valley plays its Saturday games at 9:45 a.m. against Salmon, 1:30 p.m. against Park City (Utah) and 5:15 p.m. against Jackson Hole (Wyo.). Idaho Falls and Hawks are also in the field. The top four teams advance into the 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. semi-finals Sunday, with the championship game set for 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

 

SVSEF’s Hamilton makes world team

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Gold Team racer Simi Hamilton, 25, of Aspen, Colo. was one of six American men named Jan. 19 to the 2013 U.S. World Championship Cross Country Team competing Feb. 21-March 2 at the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

 

Squirts tournament results

Sun Valley Youth Hockey’s Squirt teams (ages 9-10) competed in an eight-team home tournament Jan. 12-13 at Sun Valley Skating Center. SV White (3-1) placed third with wins over Boise Hawks 5-3, Salmon 9-3 and Idaho Falls 6-0. SV Black (1-3) defeated Salmon 6-1 for seventh place. Winning the two-day tourney was Park City Ice Miners over Salt Lake City (Utah) Lightning.

 

Tour de Twin Cities Nordic

Mike Sinnott, Matt Gelso and Kevin Bolger of the SVSEF Nordic Gold Team raced Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19-20 at Wirth Park in Minneapolis, Minn. in the Tour de Twin Cities classic and skate races. In Sunday’s 20-kilometer mass start classic event for 110 men, the 24-year-old Gelso (47:58) placed fourth and Sinnott, 27, was sixth (48:01) behind winner Torin Koos, 32, of the Bridger Ski Foundation (47:53). Bolger, 19, finished 25th in 48:51. In Saturday’s 10k freestyle event, Gelso was sixth 33 seconds back, Sinnott placed seventh and Bolger was 30th.

 

Vandal boosters meet Friday at Blue Lakes CC

University of Idaho and Magic Valley Vandal boosters are invited to the 11th annual Vandal Winterfest Banquet Friday, Jan. 25 starting with a 6 p.m. social hour at Blue Lakes Country Club, Twin Falls. Robinson is Rookie of the Year on off-road circuit

Local off-road racer Paul Robinson, competing as 9 Lives Racing, finished the 2012 Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts (SNORE) Championship Series in third place out of 34 contestants in the Pro 9 Class. Robinson said, “There were no easy races, and there were a lot of upside down and broken cars at every race. We managed to keep the No. 988 car on all four wheels and finished 10-3-6-3-2-4-3 for third in the championship series.”

He earned “Rookie of the Year” honors on the circuit. Robinson thanked his sponsors: Parts Plus Hailey, Sun Valley Transfer and Storage, Earthworks Excavation, Fireplaces Etc., Rocky Mountain Hardware, Sun Valley Auto Club, Ketchum Chiropractic, First Lite, United Oil, Smith Optics, American Heating, Grumpy’s, Woodside Motor Sports, Byron’s Welding, Anderson Asphalt, Windy City Graphics and Rick Allington, attorney.

 

B, B+ hockey league results

Results from Sunday’s B, B+ Hockey League games at Sun Valley Skating Center:

Vipers (6-4-0) downed Sharks (5-5-0) by a 4-2 score on goals by Dan Choma (2), Jim Laski and Baird Gourlay. For Sharks, goals came from Jen Embree and Cruger Thomas, with an assist by Sara Schroeder.

Chris Salvatierra’s hat trick helped Flounders (3-6-1) get past Rockets (4-5-1) by an 8-3 count. Other single goals for the winners came from Jim Slanetz, John Baker, Jeff Ballou, Jini Griffith and Sean Murphy. Scoring for Rockets were Todd Avison, Alex Baron and Tim Jeneson.

Skating to a 5-5 tie were Hutch’s Bad Dogs (4-4-2) and Aardvarks (5-3-2). Hutch’s goals were scored by Rob Prew (2), Baba Street, Lacie Hernandez and Salvatierra. Aardvarks points came from Dave Klemer (3 goals/1 assist), Will Hemmings (1/3), Eric Wingard (1/0) and Bags Brokaw (0/1).
