Alpine racers brave chill at Brundage, Schweitzer

In slalom, downhill


Cold temperatures greeted 117 boys and girls ages 6-11 in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s North Series slalom races Jan. 12-13 at Brundage Mountain near McCall.

There were 20 Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation kids in the field braving the elements over two days.

SVSEF Alpine Program Director Ruben Macaya said, “The venue could not have been better for that age group. It was an awesome run.”

Among SVSEF first-place class winners were Madison Ferris, Kaia Jensen, Marit Kaiser, Bennett Snyder, Josh Blackburn, Wyatt Minor and Hannah Ferris. Here are weekend-best SL class placings:

- U-14 girls: 1—Kaia Jensen.

- U-12 girls: 1—Madison Ferris. 3—Lily Fitzgerald. 7—Allison Rathfon. 11—Anja Jensen. 12—Sage Curtis. 14—Laine Allison. 16—Miriam Gilman. 20—Anja Schweiger.

- U-12 boys: 1—Wyatt Minor and Bennett Snyder. 3—Buey Grossman. 11—William Everitt. 13—Charlie Snyder.

- U-10 girls: 1—Hannah Ferris and Marit Kaiser. 2—Anhwei Kirk. 5—Jessica Blackburn. 10—Tatum Minor.

- U-10 boys: 1—Josh Blackburn.

- U-8 girls: 1—Goldie Kirk.

 

Up at Schweitzer

In other news, 15 older SVSEF racers competed in a field of 108 competitors Saturday and Sunday in Western Region Speed Series downhills at Schweitzer Mountain near Sandpoint in northern Idaho.

Linnea Baysinger made the podium Sunday with a third place in U-18, fourth place overall. Top DH class placings for SVSEF:

- U-21 boys: 8—Christopher Nalen.

- U-21 girls: 4—Amanda Stelling. 7—Taylor Gilliam.

- U-18 boys: 6—Parker Scott (8th of 61 overall) and William Harder (9th of 62 overall). 18—Ben Kanellitsas. 26—Payton Anderson. 28—Logan Shipley. 30—Tanner Josey. 37—Garrett Lodge.

- U-18 girls: 3—Linnea Baysinger (4th of 45 overall). 5—Jordan Fitzgerald (8th overall). 7—Kyla Miller. 8—Mackenzie Bachmeier. 9—Jenna Lou Jansky.
