Coal and candy

Santa’s elves are in high gear. Someone sneaked a peek at their list of gifts for special stockings and found these highlights:

Coal: For Idaho Gov. Butch Otter and Republican legislators who say the Legislature may revisit the education laws that voters soundly defeated in November.

Candy: For Vail Ski Corp., which acquired two ski areas that train entry level skiers in the Midwest, one of the resort’s major markets. So smart.

Coal: For the Grinches on the Sun Valley City Council who have reduced the city’s contribution to children’s recreation programs by $10,000 since fiscal year 2011.

Candy: For Mother Nature, who’s been so generous to us snow farmers to date.

Coal: For local public officials who damage Sun Valley’s economy by denying the area sensible airport improvements and voters who blocked spending local sales taxes to open up new air markets.

Candy: For the organizations working mightily to put together long-term care programs for the valley’s sick and elderly.

Coal: For the majority of Idaho legislators who’ve endangered the public by refusing to ban phoning while driving.

Candy: For Blaine County Prosecutor Jim Thomas who released the half-million-dollar investigations of city of Sun Valley operations so the public could see what the city paid for.

Coal: For the lame-duck Congress that looks like it will remain deadlocked and do-nothing in a nation that desperately needs more statesmen, fewer politicians and more progress.

Candy: For the fire chiefs in the Ketchum, Sun Valley and Wood River departments who’ve done what politicians couldn’t and drafted a plan to merge to provide better and cheaper service.

Coal: To state lawmakers, including Idaho’s, who tried to suppress the vote with unnecessary and often onerous voter ID laws.

Candy: For the local elves—donors and volunteers—who provide gifts and services to struggling local neighbors.
