Ski team director to step down

Don Wiseman will pursue new interests

Don Wiseman

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Executive Director Don Wiseman will step down on April 15 after 11 years as the ski team’s leader. Wiseman said he’s leaving the team on good terms and will remain available as a consultant.

“There’s a very positive attitude about the transition from the board and staff,” Wiseman said. “I will be working with whoever follows me. The new director will have my full support.”

Wiseman said he worked hard to reorganize many aspects of the foundation and that it is operating at a “completely different level” than when he began. He said he’s resigning because he accomplished what he set out to do when he was hired and it’s time to pursue new interests.

“Your life changes and there’s new things on the horizon,” he said. “That’s pretty much it.”

A recent foundation news release states that under Wiseman’s leadership, the ski team was transformed into an organization acknowledged as a “leader” in the United States Ski and Snowboard Association club system.

Wiseman said directing the ski team has been a “really fun ride” that he’ll remember as a special part of his life. He said the most rewarding aspect of the job is the “intense” relationships he developed with athletes, coaches and members of the community.

“I’m just amazed with what our kids do,” he said. “It’s fun to watch them progress from when they’re 8 or 9 to their early 20s. These sports are lifetime sports and the values we teach stay at the core.”

The news release states that the foundation will begin an “extensive” search for a successor to Wiseman in January.

The Ketchum-based Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation offers programs to develop athletes in alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
