A terrific first week of early-season alpine skiing for 27 Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation racers wrapped up Thursday with the final slaloms of the Eric Hays Memorial Open Series technical races at Park City (Utah) Mountain Resort.

Younger SVSEF skiers in U-16 (ages 14-15) and U-14 (12-13) classes met the challenges of Payday Run—Samantha Busby and Haley Cutler leading the Sun Valley U-16 girls among the 58 women in the four-day series. There were 83 men.

Winning the U-16 class, the 15-year-old Busby started off the series Monday with a third-place finish in giant slalom, 1.59 seconds back.

She pulled closer to University of Utah double GS winner Jaime DuPratt on Tuesday with another third-place GS result, just .78 seconds behind the 22-year-old DuPratt this time. Busby clocked the second-fastest second run Tuesday.

In Wednesday’s women’s slalom, 15-year-old Cutler just missed the U-16 podium in fourth place, good for seventh overall out of 46 two-run finishers. Cutler also placed fourth in the U-16s and sixth overall in Tuesday’s GS.

Up in Canada at Panorama Mountain Resort in British Columbia, two older SVSEF racers competed in Wednesday’s Van Houtte Cup giant slalom. Kipling Weisel placed 9th of 44 in the U-18 (ages 16-17) class and 47th overall of 79 finishers. KJ Savaria was 11th of the U-18 racers (53rd overall).
