Challis pressure holds down Carey 63-38

Season opener

Defensive pressure by the Challis Vikings led to a 63-38 non-conference victory by the host team over visiting Carey on Tuesday night in the prep girls’ basketball season-opening game for both teams.

Coming off a 22-0 State 1A Division 2 volleyball championship season, the senior-laden Challis team used its height and defensive intensity to build a 35-18 halftime lead, then added 19 points in the third.

Senior Jaide Parke of Carey had 12 points including a pair of 3-pointers and senior Morgan Parke tallied a team-high 13 points. Other scorers were Lilly Rivera 5 points, Medin Cenarrusa 3, Ashley Durtschi 2, Paige Koudelka 2 and Daphne Kirkland 1.

Carey shot 10-for-16 from the free throw line. Challis’ Morgan Miller (17 points) led three Vikings in double figures.

The Carey Panthers visited Oakley (1-0) on Thursday night, the Hornets coming off an overtime win over Hansen. On Tuesday, Nov. 20, the Panthers visit defending state champion Dietrich for a non-conference skirmish. A subsequent game against Dietrich, set for Carey Jan. 3, will count in Northside Conference league standings.
