In USFS skating

Wood River High School’s reigning Homecoming Queen, senior Nicole Pratt, passed her Senior Free Skate test in Ogden, Utah, Sunday, Nov. 4.

In doing so, she became a U.S. Figure Skating double gold medalist. Senior Free Skate is the highest test level a singles competitive skater can attain.

Pratt’s achievement is the culmination of 12 years of year-round weekly training. It marks a progression through eight different increasingly difficult free skate test levels.

The 17-year-old honors student has passed the toughest test in singles figure skating.

To pass, a skater must skate a four-minute program to music before a panel of three qualified USFS judges.

The program must include at least four double or triple jumps, one of which must be a double lutz, as well as two different jump combinations consisting of doubles or a double and a triple jump, as well as high level spins and footwork.

Pratt began skating 10 years ago in the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club’s “Skate-With Us” group classes for beginners.

A talented performer as well as a competitive skater, Pratt got her first taste of performing as a member of the children’s number in the Sun Valley’s summer ice show.

She has performed solos in Sun Valley’s Christmas Eve “Nutcracker on Ice” and in the SVFSC spring performances.

In 2010 Pratt won the Phyllis Kourland Cup for the Most Outstanding Artistic Program at the Novice through Senior Level during the Sun Valley Summer Championships.

Last summer marked Nicole’s second summer as a professional member of Sun Valley’s “Summer On Ice” ensemble cast. Darlin Baker is Pratt’s primary coach/choreographer.

In addition to theatrical skating, Pratt has enjoyed many years of figure skating competition. She has actively competed locally, and in Jackson Hole, Salt Lake, Boise, Spokane, Seattle, Phoenix, and San Diego, while maintaining an excellent GPA and participating in community service programs and extracurricular school activities.

Pratt earned her first USFS gold medal in 2010 in the Moves in the Field. Moves in the Field tests are required prerequisites to the Free Skate and Ice Dancing tests that rank a skater for competition.

Nicole joins 18-year-old Community School senior Shayna Moellenberg as the only resident SVFSC junior members who are USFS double gold medalists.
