Wolverines to host ‘VEX Sack Attack’

Robotic competition set for Nov. 9 in Hailey

Wood River High School’s Wolverine Robotics Team will host a robotic skills competition on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Community Campus on Fox Acres Road in Hailey.

Kevin Lupton, an instructor at the high school’s Architectural and Mechanical Design Academy and the team advisor, said he expects 18 teams of middle and high school robot builders from Idaho and Utah to participate in the Idaho Fall VEX Robotics Tournament.

Sponsored by VEX Robotics Design System, a company that designs and builds components for robots, the competition tests robotic skills of machines built by students.

In past years, the competition has involved robotic skills for picking up, lifting, stacking or throwing objects such as plastic balls or donuts. This year’s competition, dubbed the VEX Sack Attack, will require robotic manipulation of small sacks filled with plastic pellets. Robotic teams will score points by getting their machines to place sacks on designated floor tiles, by lifting them into troughs 15 inches off the ground or by lifting them even higher onto 30-inch scoring platforms.

The top-placing teams at the competition will qualify for Utah Mountain Regional competition, which is a world championship qualifier for international competition next spring in Anaheim, Calif.

The Nov. 9 event is free to the public. Practice rounds and a skills competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Qualifying rounds and finals will be held from 4-6 p.m.
