Sun Valley amends marketing contract

City approves Mountain Rides contract for same amount

The city of Sun Valley has balked at approving a fiscal 2013 contract with the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance until it gets an agreement from the organization to regularly provide it with more concrete data about its performance.
During a regular City Council meeting Thursday, the council also said the city wants to pay the Marketing Alliance on a month-to-month basis, rather than quarterly.
Rather than approve the contract, as was expected by the meeting agenda, the council requested that the Marketing Alliance present an amended version of the $250,000 contract at a council meeting Dec. 6. The council is expected to approve the revised contract on that day.
“The council requested that the Marketing Alliance include extensive benchmarking against other resorts in addition to a detailed strategic and operational plan during our quarterly reports to the city,” said Arlene Schieven, Marketing Alliance president and chief marketing officer, in an interview.
Schieven said the contract presented to the council Thursday required that the Marketing Alliance provide only “performance tracking” and a summary of the organization’s activities for fiscal 2013.
“The council is looking for different details in a different format,” Schieven said.
Councilman Bob Youngman said the motivation for changing the payment structure to shorter-term monthly payments is to give the organization more incentive to provide the requested data.
The council voted to authorize Mayor DeWayne Briscoe to make monthly payments to the Marketing Alliance during the months of October and November in the amount of $20,833 ($250,000 divided by 12) to continue the city’s funding of the organization while the contract is rewritten.
Schieven said the Marketing Alliance’s workload is “very heavy” at the moment since the organization had just launched this season’s winter marketing campaign Oct. 15. However, she said, the Marketing Alliance would rewrite the contract in time for the Dec. 6 meeting.
The council did approve a $250,000 contract with Mountain Rides.
“Do we feel any obligation to pay this contract monthly?” Councilwoman Michelle Griffith asked.
    Youngman said no.
“There’s no performance aspect [concerning Mountain Rides] that we review, that we’d better review, except on an annual basis,” he said. “It’s just a reflection of our interaction with those organizations.”
