Panthers rush for 541 yards in 64-22 victory

Carey’s line, running rout Richfield Tigers

By JEFF CORDES
Express Staff Writer

Carey’s Patrick Baird makes a diving touchdown catch on a pass from quarterback Jordan Dilworth giving the Panthers a 12-0 lead early in Wednesday’s 64-22 Carey win at Richfield.

It was an impressive blocking and running display for the resurgent Carey School Panthers on Wednesday in a Sawtooth Conference North eight-man grid game at Richfield.

Carey (4-2, 1-1 league), winning its third straight game, rushed for 541 yards on 53 carries and piled up nine touchdowns in a 64-22 triumph over Richfield (1-3, 1-1). It was Carey’s first road win of 2012.

Wednesday’s latest success was also the 100th coaching win for Carey’s 12th-year head coach Lane Kirkland (100-22).

After a 1-2 start to the season, Carey has scored 23 touchdowns and averaged 55.3 ppg in its last three wins. The Panthers have rushed 112 times for 797 yards the last two weeks.

The Panthers have done it on offense by dominating the line of scrimmage behind the blocking of sophomore center Matt Whitworth and senior guards Glen Andrews and Francisco “Poncho” Gamino.

Packing the payload were the “3 Amigos”: Junior Christian Zarate (19 carries for 199 yards), junior Luis Garcia (6 carries, 138 yards) and junior Tori Alvarez (7 carries, 62 yards). Garcia broke loose for 51- and 68-yard TD runs, and Zarate ran home from 65 yards.

Senior quarterback Jordan Dilworth (8-for-15, 118 yards, 3 TDs) guided the offense.

Alvarez (24-yard pass reception, 10-yard run) scored two of Carey’s first three TDs helping his team build a 20-0 lead in the first nine minutes. Richfield had trouble with its punting unit and gave Carey great field position early in the game.

Richfield’s junior runner Zak Wood (128 rushing yards, 290 all-purpose yards) broke free for two long scores on a run and a long pass—both after Carey fumbles—to bring the Tigers back into a 20-14 game.

As they’ve done the past two games, Carey’s defense buckled down big time in the face of a comeback by its opponent.

Senior linebacker Gunner Thompson (9 tackles) and freshman Joe Parke met Wood head-on with a bone-crushing tackle on Richfield’s first possession after Wood’s 80-yard TD reception. Thompson added two more solo tackles forcing the Tigers (6 punts) to kick.

On Carey’s next attack Dilworth kept the ball for a 14-yard gainer around the end. Garcia took the next hand-off and gave the Tiger defense two little stutter steps en route to a high-flying 51-yard TD run making the score 28-14 at half.

Carey opened the second half with two unanswered touchdowns to ignite the rout. After halftime, the Panthers had five touchdowns to one for the shorthanded Tiger squad.

Dilworth ran home from 10 yards out after throwing to Alvarez for 29 yards during a six-play, 69-yard drive. Zarate’s interception on a pass tipped by teammate Alvarez led to a 65-yard scoring drive—Dilworth’s 30-yard bomb to Nate Adamson finishing it off.

Zarate, Garcia and Zach Olsen tacked on scoring runs of 65, 68 and 46 yards respectively in the game’s final 14 minutes.

Unfortunately Richfield lost one of its stalwart tacklers, senior Ricky Godin (11 tackles) to what was believed to be a broken leg during Godin’s sideline tackle on Alvarez early in the third quarter. His teammates Wood (16 tackles) and Martin Becali (13) picked up the load.

Other top Carey tacklers were Andrews (9), Gamino (8), Alvarez (7), Whitworth (7) and Garcia (7). The hard-hitting game was a bit sloppy, Carey losing five fumbles and Richfield turning it over four times.

For the game, Carey had 707 total yards and Richfield 294.

Next, Carey’s “Senior Night” home football finale against Camas County of Fairfield (3-2, 0-2) on Friday, Oct. 12 will feature a breast cancer awareness theme. The Panther varsity cheerleaders are now accepting pre-orders at $12 per shirt for black-colored t-shirts with Carey High School logo and “Pink Panther” design.
