WRHS swimmers capture Poca-tello Invite

Next meet Oct. 14


     Wood River High School swimmers kept applying the pressure as coach Brian Gallagher’s girls’ and boys’ teams faced off against 11 high school teams and over 150 swimmers Sept. 28 at the Pocatello Invitational at Idaho State University’s Reed Complex.

     Continuing to excel in regional competition, the Wolverine girls won the meet handily, outscoring their closest competitor, Century of Pocatello, by nearly 100 points.

     The Ketchum-based boys’ squad captured third overall, just a few points behind Century and Twin Falls.

     Wood River girls won all three relays. They were:

     200-yard medley (2:02.75) with an all-freshman foursome of Loni Unser, Olivia Wentzell, Maddie Johnson and Ashley Dreyfus; 200 freestyle (1:51.07) with Olivia Wentzell, Colby Werley, Kelsey Syms and Lena Friesen; 400 freestyle (4:04.08)Maddie Johnson, Kaedi Fry, Tayler Bates and Lena Friesen.

     Ketchum’s second 400 free team of Colby Werley, Kelsey Syms, Ashley Dreyfus and Loni Unser placed third in 4:12.62. The boys’ relay of Gus Kimball, Luke Verst, Logan Johnston and Marcus Lemma tied for second in 200 medley (1:57.63), and then handily took first place with room to spare in 200 free (1:43.70).

     Leading the Wolverines in scoring first-place points: Senior Lena Friesen (winning 100- and 200-yard freestyle); senior Marcus Lemma (50 free); freshman Maddie Johnson (200 IM) and Olivia Wentzell (100 breast stroke).

     The Wolverines travel Oct. 13for the Twin Falls High School Invitational. Wood River then hosts the regional championships at Ketchum’s Wood River Y Pool Saturday, Oct. 20.

     Combining his high school and year-round SV5B swimmers, coach Gallagher will continue a tough challenging schedule. His swimmers go on the road Oct. 5-7 to Nampa for the Koudleka Memorial, and to Idaho Falls Oct. 27 for the Spook Slash Sprints. The Idaho State High School Swim Championships are scheduled in Boise, Nov. 2-3.
