Kirsys Campbell makes nationals in 3000 run
Wood River Middle School distance runner Kirsys Campbell has qualified in the Midget Girls (ages 11-12) class for the USATF National Junior Olympics July 23-29 at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. She will compete in the 3000-meter run. Last year Campbell competed in that event at nationals and finished 17th.
Campbell and two other locals competed last weekend in the USATF Region 11 Track and Field Championships at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mt. The others were Jaren Bothwell of YMCA Team Idaho in Midget Boys (11-12), and Cadence Campbell of the Idaho Ice Track and Field Club in Bantam Girls (9-10).
Kirsys Campbell won the windy regional 300m run in 11:36.71 and placed second at 1500m in 5:45.42. Cadence Campbell was fourth at 1500m (7:59.88) and eighth in the 200m dash (47.34). Bothwell placed 10th in 100m and 200m (14.48 and 30.60) and 11th long jump.
Idaho State Bicycle Road Races
Ketchum's Durance-Colnago bicycle racers turned in five podium finishes during the Larry H. Miller Subaru Idaho State Road Race Championships June 16 near Emmett.
Competitors raced on courses measuring 14 miles for juniors, to 31 miles and 52 miles, and also 72 miles for Pro Men, Master Men 35-plus and Men's Category 3.
Durance placings were: 1—John Swyers and Taylor Benz. 2—Tom Campion. 3—Jon Engen and Eric Kafka. Other local class placings were: 8—Scott Grill. 9—Joel Zellers. 16—Billy Collins.
Idaho Pump Track bike races planned for Monday
Part of the Ride Sun Valley Bike Festival, the third annual Idaho Pump Track State Championship event sponsored by Cox is set for Monday, July 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Ketchum Bike Park located kittycorner to Atkinson Park. Registration and practice runs begin at 5 p.m. at the bike park.
Last year, over 100 kids took part and many adults as well. Spectators encircle the course to cheer on the racers. The competitors take timed laps and "pump" their bikes to maintain speed around the smooth track. Classes are Open/Pro plus the following age classes—13-and-under, 9-and-under and 4-and-under Mini Racing (starts 6 p.m. followed by the others).
Chuck Gates Junior Golf tournament set for Friday
Sign up by Thursday, June 28 at 4 p.m. for the ninth annual Chuck Gates Junior Golf tournament designed for all kids ages 10-18. The tournament is planned for Friday, June 29 at 1 p.m. at Bigwood Golf Course north of Ketchum. Entry fee of $15 per person includes a barbecue. There will be three-, six- and nine-hole flights. Volunteer scorers are needed. Sponsors are the City of Ketchum, Chuck Gates Youth Endowment, Sun Valley Suns Foundation and Bigwood Golf Course. Hole-in-one at Sun Valley
Page Jenner made a hole-in-one with a gap wedge on the par-3 106-yard No. 6 hole at Sun Valley Golf Course on June 20. Witnesses were Steve Cole, Alex Orb and Chip Stanek.
Magic Man Triathlon results
Two Wood River Valley athletes were among 125 triathletes finishing the second annual Magic Man Triathlon on a fast and flat course June 16 starting at Murtaugh Lake Recreation Area east of Twin Falls. The event included an Olympic distance triathlon (1-mile swim, 24-mile bike ride, 6.2-mile run) for 44 finishers, and a Sprint distance triathlon (0.5-mile swim, 12-mile bike, 3.1-mile run) for 81 finishers.
Placing third overall in the Sprint Triathlon and second in his age class was Pedro Morales, 22, in 1.12:35 (18:38 swim, 33:44 bike, 20:12 run). Finishing ninth among 34 women in the Sprint and third in her class was Sonja Coleman, 29, in 1.33:57 (22:51 swim, 38:19 bike, 31:17 run).
