School board approves Carey projects

Work set to begin Monday, June 25

By MATT FURBER
Express Staff Writer

The Blaine County School District board of trustees on June 15 unanimously approved contracts for $1.79 million in improvements for the Carey School. The goal of the project is to improve access and the flow of foot and vehicle traffic on campus.

The decision was made at a special board meeting scheduled as a follow-up to the board's regular meeting on June 12 when the project was discussed in depth.

The agreement with Conrad Brothers Construction includes a "not to exceed" clause that guarantees that scheduled improvements, will be completed within the proposed budget, company owner Paul Conrad said in an interview.

Panther Lane is to be moved as part of a land swap with the county that will improve the entrance to the school to make it safer, Conrad said at the June 12 meeting. Former Carey Mayor Rick Baird also allowed a shift in easement associated with his adjacent property to help enable some of the changes at the school.

Conrad said there will be a safer separation of cars and buses from students when they are commuting to and from school. There will be new striping and raised walkways as well. Work will also be done to manage recurring drainage problems on campus, and 57 pedestal lamps will be installed.

Work is to begin, Monday, June 25, and be concluded before the 2012-13 school year begins.
