All I wanted was coffee

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

When I said I had to pick up some coffee from Atkinsons' the other day, my friend said, "Oh, good, I have to get some things, too." So, we parked the car and entered the No. 1 social network in the valley. When I went to grab a basket and said hello to another friend and she, involved in a deep conversation with someone else, grabbed a cart, I knew I was in trouble. She put her purse in the basket and said, "Drop the basket. We'll just use the cart."

Soon, we were making our way through the aisles selecting products and chatting with friends. Now, if you shop at Atkinsons', you also know that you'll see many folks that you just have to strike up a conversation with because you can't just say, "Hi!" Therein lies one of the problems—inattention.

After about 25 to 30 minutes we arrived at the checkout counter. As the goods were being rung up, my friend thought, "Wow, he's really eating healthy with the broccoli, the berries and all that organic food, good for him." As I watched, I thought, "Boy, look at all the stuff she got." I paid the bill, we picked up our bags and headed for the car to drive to her house and divvy up our purchases.

As we were setting the wares upon the countertop in the kitchen, she remarked, "I'm so glad you're eating organically, now." I said, "I am? This all your stuff!" "No," she said, "I didn't buy those items." "Well, whose are they, then ... and where's your purse?"

It's true. During our gabbing and socializing, while shopping, we took someone else's cart! She called Atkinsons', announcing who she was, and they said, "Yes, we have your purse and your cart's contents have been put back on the shelves."

So, we went back to the store, got the purse and began shopping again for our original selections. The lady whose cart we had pilfered innocently had turned in the purse and had to shop again. Our apologies go out to her.

Together, I paid about $100 for the two social shopping sprees and all I wanted was coffee. I've decided to snub everyone I come in contact with now while shopping. But, I won't do it. After all, it is the social hour and who wants to shop alone?

Nice talking to you.
