Lady Wolverines open season with win

Wood River pounds out 16 hits in win

The Wood River Lady Wolverines opened the season with a handful of hits that resulted in early runs, and impressive pitching.

It translated into the team's first win as Wood River traveled to Filer on Friday, March 9, and came away with the first victory of the season, 8-6.

The nerves were evident early on as the Lady Wolverines took to the field against the Wildcats; shaking off the jitters, they quickly got back into shape.

Wood River (1-0) had 16 hits and held Filer (0-1) to just seven.

Freshman Britney Bradley was on the mound to open the season and fellow freshman Cicely Peavy was behind the plate. It was a winning combination for the two rookies, something that head coach Dale Martin needed to see.

Bradley went a full seven innings and struck out six batters.

"Britney was nervous in the first inning. However, she settled down and pitched a solid game," said Wood River assistant head coach Dick Coleman. "Cicely Peavey was a standout behind the plate."

Peavey was also a standout at the plate, going 4 for 4 with two doubles.

Junior Sydney Tidwell resumed her march toward the top of almost every offensive category by going 4 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs.

Wood River opened the game with four runs in the first inning and didn't let up the barrage on offense.

Though they had an effective offense putting runs on the board, the Lady Wolverines were still working out the kinks on defense, as they committed four errors on the day.

Filer made it interesting near the end of the game in the seventh inning. Trailing 8-4, the Wildcats worked the count full then laced a single up the middle to start the inning. Filer then hit a two-run home run to left-center field to make the score 8-6.

Bradley hung in there and made some quality pitches with the pressure on to record an infield pop fly to senior shortstop K.T. Martinez.

Martinez had a great day in her return to the diamond, going 4 for 5 at the leadoff spot with two runs.

Bradley fooled the next batter, striking her out with a vicious rise ball.

Junior third baseman Kori Paradis went 1 for 3; sophomore second baseman Shelby Cooper went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

Senior leftfielder Devan Atkinson went 1 for 4 with a run on the day.

Wood River traveled to Buhl on Tuesday, March 13. Look for the story on that game in Friday's edition. On, Thursday, March 13, the Lady Wolverines travel to Kimberly for their third game of the season. The coverage for that game will be in next week's newspaper.
