Motorcyclist injured in accident with deer

Incident occurred south of Stanley on Highway 75

By JASON KAUFFMAN
Express Staff Writer

A motorcyclist riding south on state Highway 75 near Stanley late in the day on Saturday struck a young mule deer buck and subsequently crashed.

According to an Idaho Mountain Express reporter on the scene, the middle-aged man was riding near milepost 182 around 8:30 p.m. when the deer rushed onto the roadway, causing the accident. The reporter, who was seated in a vehicle that was directly ahead of the motorcyclist, said the collision caused the rider to swerve off the highway and into a roadside ditch.

Coming to rest, the motorcycle reportedly fell on top of the man. The impact killed the deer.

A Custer County Sheriff's Deputy was among the first emergency responders to arrive at the scene of the accident. Calls to the officer for additional information were not returned in time for this article.

Amateur HAM radio operators were the first to alert authorities that the accident had occurred.

The motorcyclist, who was reportedly riding without a helmet, received non-life-threatening injuries to his head as well as his right side and arm. The man was transported to St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center by ambulance staff stationed in Stanley.

Wear your helmet. Wear your seatbelt. Wear your flourescent vest.

Maybe its just safer to stay at home and watch tv, huh?

The HAM radio users/network was the key to the quick response. The driver of the vehicle in which the IME reporter was riding had his HAM radio with him and was able to get help coming immediately after the accident. That's called being prepared.
It's fun easy and inexpensive to get the license, check it out at wrarc.org. Good job Ben, Chris and all of the other first responders.

Do you think that just because it was a motorcycle they were going too fast? For your information the motorcycle was under the speed limit. A driver whether a car or motorcycle can not help a deer jumping from a roadside bush and hitting them. Have your facts before you judge.

I hit a deer on my bicycle! Coming down an Adams Gulch trail, dusk and going about 10-15 miles an hour. Deer was spooked and just leaped out in front of me. I was wearing a helmet but a good case of road rash. Deer bounded about 20 feet stopped with a "huh" look on its face then resumed browsing.

So much for the "slow down" theory.

Sorry. I wasn`t pointing fingers. I was thinking of the flagged "deer zone" north of Hailey (and remembering our Sheriffs advice). People show little regard for the sign and his warning.(I almost got nailed by a bike walking up Oregon Gulch yesterday. They are stealth-like, fast and silent).

A motorcyclist who rides at dusk without a helmet has a death wish. C'mon people. Wear a helmet!
