Matt Lichtenberg honored for project

Wood River High School senior Matthew Lichtenberg was awarded the Eagle Scout honor during a court of honor ceremony on Wednesday Nov. 18, 2009 at his Hailey home.

Working with Wood River Land Trust executive director Scott Boettger, Lichtenberg organized volunteers and businesses to donate time and materials to build a bridge on The Draper Wood River Preserve.

Used by locals and visitors, the trail often floods during the spring. The new bridge is now over that area. The 85-acre Draper Wood River Preserve is located on the west side of the Big Wood River at Lions Park, out Hailey's Croy Creek.

Lichtenberg is the son of Jeff and Martha Lichtenberg of Hailey. He is a member of the Wood River High School swim team, debate team and triathlon club. Matt plans on attending college next fall.

Presenting the award was special guest and mentor to Lichtenberg, Fred Bradshaw of the Snake River Council. The Eagle award is the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle must have completed 21 merit badges and organized a service project that benefits church, community or school.

Lichtenberg would like to thank the following for their time, materials and support:

The Bryson family, Scott Boettger, Fred and Jeannie Bradshaw, Mike Chandler, Mike and Annette Christiansen, Peter and Jane Dyndiuk, Jim and Susan King, Jerry Odegard, Mike Parker, Sherrie Phelps, the Swink family, Jason and Carson Smith, Larry & Cathy Schiers, Jeff Shiver, Josh McNeil, Stock Lumber, Sawtooth Wood Products, Atkinsons' Market, Wood River Land Trust, scout leaders, and his parents and sisters.

At the precise moment I start to doubt the youth of this country and our prospects as a people, I read a story like this. There is a hope for us yet. Congratulations to young Mr. Lichtenberg, for not only his personal achievements, but also for making this cynical 30-something believe in our youth again.
