High Sierra

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

After retiring, I quickly realized that I didn't have enough income to do so. So much for financial planning in this era of prosperity. Therefore, I got another job, which I started on March 16. Two weeks later, another came on the scene and we've been friends ever since. We laugh all the time and discover new things together at the job every week.

It's non-stop talking when we meet in the mornings and the only reason we stop is because her mom has to feed her. You see, she's 7 months old, her name is Sierra and we're great friends. She's the best audience I've ever had. She really gets me. We hit it off immediately and the good times have continued to roll. She never nags and her mood is always up. I don't even mind when she drools on me or screams in my ear until I'm tone deaf. To me, it's funny stuff.

Today as I was holding her while I typed on the computer keyboard, she decided that I wasn't paying enough attention to her, so she grabbed my nose, twisted it and shrieked, "Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah!" Now, that's funny—especially when other co-workers are in a conference. One time when we were playing that intellectual game peekaboo, I stopped and said, "Hey, Sierra, it's always going to be me behind these hands." Well. She fell over laughing.

Another time, she was studying me so intently that I actually believed she knew exactly what I was thinking. Then, she filled her pants. Love her! We laughed our faces off and Mom had to come and change her. Afterward, we were ready to roll again.

She has made my job a joyous one and I'm beginning to think we will be friends for a long time. Anyway, I decided that when I'm 89 I'm going to ask her to marry me. A 65-plus year difference—so what? It's not how old you are—it's how you act. We act exactly the same now and I bet when I get in my 90s, I'll act just the same—like a 7-month-old baby. Age is nothing! It's kind of a Bogart-and-Bacall deal. He was 46 and she was 20 when they met and they had a long and happy life together. I think the best movie he ever did was "High Sierra." It's a sign, folks. Hi, Sierra, and nice talking to you.
