Sun Valley raises cost of day pass $5

By TREVON MILLIARD
Express Staff Writer

Skiers and snowboarders will pay $5 more for a day on Bald Mountain during peak season this winter than they did last year.

Sun Valley Co. announced its one-day adult lift ticket price, which for Baldy is $85 in peak season—Dec. 26 to Jan. 2—and for Dollar Mountain is $42.

In recent history, the price has increased year to year, with each bump usually being larger than the previous year's. A peak-season day pass for Baldy cost $66 in 2004, $67 in 2005, $69 in 2006, $74 in 2007, $79 in 2008, and $80 in 2009.

Aspen Skiing Co., which controls four lift-served mountains around Aspen, Colo., hasn't released its one-day lift prices yet and neither have Vail-Beaver Creek or Keystone-Breckenridge, also in Colorado.

Sun Valley's last-year ticket price of $80 was cheaper than those resorts, with Aspen charging $96, Vail-Beaver Creek $97 and Keystone-Breckenridge $92. With this year's $5 increase, Sun Valley is still below those resorts' last year prices.

According to an Aspen employee, ticket prices won't be formalized until mid-November so the company can base early-season prices on snow conditions. Vail-Beaver Creek prices won't be available until a day or two before the Nov. 20 opening, for the same reason. Keystone-Breckenridge has announced an opening-day price of $65 for adults, but one-day prices for the rest of the season are still up in the air.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Wyoming has announced one-day lift ticket prices of $91 for its peak season.

I rode somewhere around 80 days on baldy last season and never bought a ticket. The ticket prices and the season ticket prices are way too high, and please don't compare baldy to anything in Colorado ever again.

Can we not mention the fondue lift either? Sun Valley is repeatedly ranked lowest (or second to Copper sometimes) on environmental standards and sustainability scores for ski resorts. Why build another lift, especially one that goes to a restaurant and doesn't even summit?

Sun Valley lowered their season pass prices dramatically this year and will have more locals because if it. Tourists are willing and able to pay premium prices for skiing and still pay less than many Colorado resorts. Sun Valley operates a great (and expensive) mountain and we don't need the cussing, pot smoking, degraded Californian culture on the mountain every day. That is what you get when ticket prices are too low (along with a non-profitable operation). Get a job Lee.

Lee obviously thinks he should be able to ski for next to nothing. That is called a "sense of entitlement". This mindset thinks that it does not matter what other people sacifice to be able to ski or how hard other people have worked to earn dollars to ski. They think that they should be subsidized and put on equal footing. In this case the subsidy should come from the Sun Valley Company as their owner is rich. Of course, this is what our politicians and others have taught them along with envying others who appear to have more than you do. What else can we expect?

Hey Mark, I'm a SV native and have a service business here. Your California slander does not help me, my family, my friends earn a living here, it's tough enough as it is. Shut the f... up. We all drink from the same well. Your and you kind are a problem. You should move back to IF or Pokey,or Seattle or where ever you hatched. International destination Resort, you bigot! You ever go to the PIO? Owned by a Californian, need I go on?

you are such an inspiration Lee. Why do you want to set fire to everything, maybe you need therapy. I can't wait for the mountain to open. With the lift prices set the way they just set them at, it will be empty, and I like that. I don't think Sun Valley has to operate like other resorts, they can and do what they want.

Sun Valley is a joke! They will never get. I would love to see the whole mountain burn next time along with the hotel!
