Sports summary


Cyclocross races return to River Run Saturday

The recent mild weather has brought out bicyclists in droves. They'll have a chance to sample a cyclocross course Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24-25 during the Road & Dirt Crosstoberfest at River Run.

Hailey's Powerhouse Fit Studio along with Sun Valley Company and Scott USA are sponsoring the two-day racing event at Sun Valley's River Run Plaza area in conjunction with a festival of food, refreshments and special fall sales.

Be sure to catch the nine-piece Oompah Band.

Admission is free for spectators, although racers are charged fees. Organizer Billy Olson said there is a special race course preview today, Wednesday. He promises a smoother and easier championship course on Sunday.

Officially, the event is being called the Idaho State Championship Cyclocross Race. There will be prizes for all categories Saturday and medals Sunday. For elite racers in Women's and Men's 1/2, there will be 50% cash payback both days. Best costume gets a prize.

Registration is from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. both days. Times:

11:45 a.m., C Race (Juniors and Masters 35/45 B, 20 minutes). 12:10 p.m., B Race (Women 1/2/3 and Masters 35/45 A, 40 minutes). 12:55 p.m., D Race (Men and Women Category 4, 20 minutes);

1:30 p.m., Shimano Youth Series 12-and-under, 5-and-under and 9-and-under. The Shimano kids' races have no entry fees. 2 p.m., A Race (Pro Men 1/2 and Men Category 3, 60 minutes).

Pre-registration fees range from $20 per day for juniors to $40 for Pros, and an additional $5 fee for day-of-race entry.

Fall Cyclocross Series due

Road & Dirt's Olson has announced details on his Web site about a Fall Cyclocross Series to be held Sunday mornings beginning Nov. 1 and running into early December.

Two venues are proposed—the Sagewillow Farms soccer fields in Elkhorn and The Community Campus, Hailey. Registration opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 10:50 a.m. each Sunday, with racing at 11 a.m. Cost is $15, licenses required.

SVSEF Ski Swap this weekend

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) holds its annual Ski Swap of new and used ski and snowboard equipment and clothing this weekend, Oct. 22-25, at The Community School's Sagewillow Barn, Elkhorn at Sun Valley. Directional signs will be posted along Elkhorn Rd.

A portion of the proceeds of sold items are donated to support general operations of the SVSEF, a 43-year-old youth organization that provides year-round ski and snowboard training and competition for 500 Wood River Valley athletes each year. Here are details:

Thursday, Oct. 22: Public check-in from 12 noon-7 p.m. at the barn. Visit svsef.org to obtain a merchandise form in advance and fill it in.

Friday, Oct. 23: Sale hours from 12 noon to 7 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 24: Sale hours from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 25: Sale hours from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Pick up unsold items 12 noon to 3 p.m.

Middle school wrestling

Wrestling season at Hailey's Wood River Middle School begins with a parent/player meeting tonight, Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria, according to head high school wrestling coach Shawn Huntington. First day of practice is after school on Monday, Oct. 26, also in the cafeteria. Huntington is a math and science teacher at Hailey's Silver Creek High School.

Rotarun's season passes on sale

Rotarun Ski Club representatives will attend this weekend's SVSEF Ski Swap to showcase their latest plans for the Hailey ski hill. Rotarun season passes will also be sold at this weekend's Ski Swap and during the Nov. 12 Business Expo in the Sun Valley Inn.

Family season ski passes for 2009-10 cost $295 for a family of four. Additional family members may be added for $50 each. Individual season passes are $145 adult, $90 junior (ages 11-17), $70 for children (5-10) and $55 for tots (4-and-under).

Strength training for cross-country skiers starts Oct. 27

Learn new and proven methods for building strength for cross-country skiing during a 10-week "Strength Training for Cross-Country Skiers," program offered by Sun Valley Nordic Ski Team coaches.

The program is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from Oct. 27-Jan. 21 at the Nordic team's Lake Creek Training Center three miles north of Ketchum. You have your choice of sessions—from 7-8 a.m. or 12 noon-1 p.m. Cost is $200, with all proceeds going to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Nordic ski team.

Barber to Boise runs

Eleven local runners joined the field of 1,250 Saturday for the Barber to Boise 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) and 5k (3.1-mile) runs in Boise. Several made the podium in their age classes and one, Ketchum's Chris Abbott, cracked the top five in the 10k event.

Abbott placed fifth of 866 10k runners in 34:28, good for first place in the Men's 30-34 age class. The men's winner was Boise's Kevin Sheehy in 31:18. Women's winner, in 11th place, was Christine Olen of Boise with a final time of 37:09. There were 384 in the 5k event.

10 kilometer: 485—Julie Simpson of Carey 57:48 (208th woman, 36th Women's 25-29). 522—Cathy Miller of Fairfield 58:55 (239th woman, 2nd Women's 55-59). 574—Barbie Crandlemire of Sun Valley 1.00:42 (275th woman, 1st Women's 65-69). 670—Carrie Westergard of Hailey 1.04:52 (351st woman, 53rd Women's 40-44).

5 kilometer: 84—Christopher Peck of Hailey 25:34 (10th Men's 40-44). 125—Brandy O'Grady of Bellevue 27:37 (58th woman, 14th Women's 25-29). 161—Maren Fuller of Ketchum 29:23 (77th woman, 18th Women's 25-29). 202—Robbie Miller of Fairfield 31:37 (3rd Men's 60-64). 253—Linda Olson of Hailey 34:25 (149th woman, 1st Women's 60-64). 299—Alexandra Peck of Hailey 36:52 (189th female, 10th 11-19).

Olympic Development fundraiser tonight in Ketchum

Wise Guy Pizza Pie in Ketchum hosts a fundraiser for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's Olympic Development Team tonight, Wednesday. Every dollar in the door after 6 p.m. goes directly to the SVSEF ODT, organizers said.

Senior hockey registration

B League ($235 per person) and B+ League ($235) Hockey League registration and league fees are due on or before Oct. 30, league commissioner Terry Crawford said. Forms may be picked up and dropped off at Sturtevants in Ketchum or Hailey. The league will not accept any players after this date.

B League is fun Co-Ed Adult (19-and-over) league with no record of wins or loses recorded and no end-of-the-season tournament. B+ League is a competitive Co-Ed Adult (19+) league with wins and losses recorded and a championship tournament at the end of the season.
