Carey, Camas County send 21 to state track

Local athletes try to bring home the gold

Watch out for Carey High School freshman Micaela Adamson in the years to come on the track. Adamson has qualified for four events this weekend at the State 1A track and field meet in Boise—the 200-meter and 400m dashes, triple jump and 4x400m relay. Photo by David N. Seelig

As expected, Dietrich senior Jaren Stoddard and Raft River senior Sally Hansen were the top athletes in the state-qualifying 4th District 1A prep track and field meet Wednesday and Thursday, May 6-7 on the ISDB oval in Gooding.

Meanwhile, Carey (10 state qualifiers) and Camas County of Fairfield (11) saved some of their best performances of the spring season for last week's district meet and will send a total 21 athletes to the State 1A track and field meet in Boise.

Stoddard swept the 100-meter, 200m and 400m dashes and joined Dietrich's first-place medley relay to rack up 32.5 points for the two-day meet. He is the top state qualifier in the 100m dash at 11.14 seconds, and second best at 200m in 22.94. The 1A class record in the 100m is 11.10 seconds by Murtaugh's Nick Cummins back in 1997.

Hansen swept the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints and won triple jump for 40 points. She will carry the top 200m dash qualifying time of 26.14 into the State 1A meet. State class record is 25.93 set by Kootenai's Darcy Collins in 2005.

Hansen's individual efforts plus three Raft River gold medals in the relays helped the Trojans grab the girls' district team championship with 165 points, ahead of second-place Camas County of Fairfield (100) and third-place Carey (95).

Third at state last May, Raft River's girls (30 sprints, 18 hurdles, 17 distances, 64 field, 36 relays) will try to move up when the State 1A meet opens Thursday, May 14 with field events at Boise State University's Bronco Stadium. Running prelims are Friday at noon, with 1A running finals Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m.

Camas County's girls, winning two individual golds (Mollie McLam pole vault, Katelyn Peterson high jump) will strive to bring home a trophy with their seven state qualifiers in 10 events—and six of those are seniors. Camas (17 sprints, 11 hurdles, 3 distances, 47 field, 22 relays) had another fine performance last week.

Katelyn Peterson owns the top state qualifying high jump at 5-4. Swedish exchange student Mette Ericsson of Camas County has the third-best long jump going into state, at 15-7.

Lane Kirkland, Carey track coach, said his Panther girls did "a great job to get third place," as a team at district.

The district star was reigning State 1A 1600m queen Amy Ellsworth, a junior who won the 800m run and triple jump at Gooding and was a big part of Carey's triumphant 4x400 relay squad also featuring Nicky Gomez, Kelsey Green and Micaela Adamson. They have the second-best state qualifying time of 4:26.44, behind Lapwai.

Among the boys, Raft River had four field golds to win the 1A district title Thursday 146-133 over Oakley. Placing a strong third with six golds including Scott Perron's 800m and 1600m sweep was Dietrich (80). The Camas boys were fifth with 51.5 and Carey sixth, 47.5.

Camas juniors Jeff Ellingson (discus) and Mickenzie Boggs (triple jump) won their events and will contend at state. Ellingson has the best qualifying throw at 145-4 and Boggs has the second-best jump at 40-4.5.

Another thing to watch at Bronco Stadium: Richfield freshman Sasha Kent has the sixth-best qualifying time in the 1A girls' 3200m run, at 12:55.74. Her mother, Becky Ward, still holds the 3200m class record of 11:17.71 set in 1994. She won that race by 66 seconds and led the Richfield girls to a share of their first-ever state track and field title.
