Cities should merge

We are residents of Sun Valley and Ketchum, supporting the efforts of a diverse group of local citizens and former and current elected officials to start a public dialogue about the possible consolidation of the governmental functions of our two towns. Sun Valley and Ketchum are one community but two towns. We share our downtown, our economy, cultural and recreational activities and more.

Beyond the obvious efficiencies and economies of scale in the delivery of critical city services, with consolidation Sun Valley voters would have a greater voice in decisions made about their downtown and Ketchum voters would have a greater say in decisions about proposed development by Sun Valley Co. Needless to say, if downtown Ketchum deteriorates, property values in Sun Valley will decline. Conversely, when Ketchum thrives, property values in Sun Valley rise and vice versa. For these and many other reasons, we believe it makes good sense to pool our community resources to better deal with the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Members of the recently formed Committee for One Community One Town in the next couple of weeks will be circulating petitions and holding an open town hall meeting to discuss this important issue. We urge everyone to participate in this public dialogue.

perhaps if ketchum practiced more fiscal responsibility you would not be havi8ng this conversation. interesting how people who are new to the area and who have no sense of history are floating this to feather their own nests. bad idea. keep the cities separate as they have been for over a century and allow ketchum to be more responsible as to where they spend their money- i.e. housing rather than silly street renovations which leave no parking. think about what you are proposing and the ramifications for all citizens of our valley. you cannot expect sun valley to bail out ketchum's overspending and excesses.
