A figure 8 knot is designed to tighten on itself. If the a figure eight knot was indeed tied then the knot is not whats in question. If the guy fell three things happen: 1) the knot that was tied was not a figure eight knot and the belayer or whoever was incharge was negligent with the safety of the patron. 2) The guy was indeed climbing with no rope. which again is a major safety violation because of the height of the apparent fall he was way to high to not be harnessed to a rope. 3) The rope he was tied to broke because of wear and there again the establishment(YMCA) is to blame for negligence. It sounds like whoever was at the climbing wall at the time of the incident didnt really know what they were doing and are the ones to blame for the man falling. There is no excuse for his fall, the person who is woeking is the one who is in charge... period.. there shouldnt be accidents like this and if you arent competent enough to know simple safety issues then you shouldnt be working at a climbing wall. 02/20/08 - 11:16
I was told by a good source that his figure 8 knot came undone and that is what caused the fall. 02/20/08 - 12:35
If his figure 8 came undone then it wasn't tied properly. From the article, it sounds like he didn't have a rope on making him the negligent one. 02/20/08 - 06:27
If the YMCA's equipment was faulty, then they are solely responsible for the safety of their patrons...waiver or not. Lawyers will be hashing this out for months if not years, while a young man's life is forever altered. That, is the real tragedy here. Leave a Comment
